Article #22 Setup Home VPN Server in 5 minutes

Submitted by admin on October 10, 2009 – 10:45 am2 Comments

vpndiagVirtual Private Network (VPN) provides secure network connection over the internet.  All packets are encrypted with either Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) or Layer Two Tunneling Protocol/ Internet Protocol Security (L2TP/IPSec) to create a secure tunnel over public network.  With any versions of Windows Operating System (XP and up), you can easily setup a VPN server and connect remotely as if you were physically on the network.  VPN solution has been adopted by many mobile professionals with security concerns over public network.  In this article, I will demonstrate setting up a VPN Server on Windows 7 as a home solution with limited concurrent connections.

    Hi. Thanks for the tutorial.

I would like to create a VPN into my home network in order to remotely manage my win 7 PC’s (using RDP) while I’m deployed and also, bandwidth permitting, access media from my server.

I followed your excellent tutorial and also set up a dyndns alias in my Belkin Pre-N router. I forwarded TCP port 1723, but I didn’t see any settings to effect PPTP pass-through.

Connecting through the internet from the other side of the planet, I can easily establish the VPN connection, but I can not see or access the computers on my home network. I also lose internet connectivity when VPN is connected– Is that normal?

Thanks again for the tutorial and thanks in advance if you could offer a tip or two.

    –Rob
